Design and facilitate a leadership conference to increase cross collaboration.

That Works® was tasked with designing and delivering an in-person and virtual hybrid leadership conference that introduced a common collaborative problem-solving approach and agreed leadership behaviours.

Challenge

Cut through the sameness of leadership conferences to actually engage and shift behaviour.

Leadership conferences often involve a lot of being talked at, without much of an opportunity to try out new things, problem-solve, and collaborate in real-time. This Australian Federal Government agency needed to quickly pivot as a national organisation to become much more collaborative and innovative in order to meet their challenges head on.

Solution

Turn the conference into a behavioural intervention.

We designed an immersive problem-solving scenario introducing relevant challenges and opportunities. Participants primed themselves with a NASA case study on the real-time evolution of collaborative leadership. Then prototyped a mission on Mars. Leaders interacted with a virtual mission control and other teams responsible for developing different parts of the overall system. Getting to the chance to build real physical prototypes to test and enhance.

Results

An event that shifted habits.

Leaders were extremely positive about their experience and learnings. The approach has now changed the way the agency delivers leadership capability events.
