Brief

Design and facilitate a high stakes executive governance process.

That Works® was tasked with designing and delivering a decison-making process for future accommodation and workplace investments, nationally. This included a series of digital data drops (packages of relevant data presented as visuals, animations and detailed reports), a pre-session deliberative opinion tool, and in-person and virtual strategic facilitation to reach collaborative agreement regarding priority investment areas that guide future workplace decisions across the organisation.

Challenge

Cut through personal bias, short investment horizons, and decisions based on limited or incomplete information.

Organisations invest heavily in workplace accommodation, with decisions lasting more than 10 years and requiring millions of dollars of investment. Often these decisions are based on the personal preferences and experiences of individuals within the group, rather than high quality evidence of future organisational and user needs. This Australian Federal Government department was seeking to establish a robust approach to collaborative decision-making that addressed the needs of the entire organisation, not just the loudest voices in the room.

Solution

Pilot a new approach to governance and executive decision-making.

We designed a deliberative process that required decision-makers to consider decision-grade evidence, before forming an opinion and reviewing several options based on this intelligence. We then guided a series of strategic discussions around challenges, opportunities and risks to reach collaborative decisions.

Results

An enduring national strategy.

The organisation developed a data-driven, national workplace strategy providing a clear, evidence base for long-term investment and operational decisions, including the consolidation of leased space. Saving the organisation more than 2.5 million dollars each year.
